Roadside memorials. Public displays of perhaps the most private moment – that moment when life stops and not-life begins. The fallout of such moments is often powerful enough to make installation artists of those whose grief exceeds their belief that they cannot draw a straight line.

To me, these intensely private yet public works represent the most visceral manifestation of both vernacular and installation art.
